The Site
The orientation of a site is very important for sports pitches, and this site's orientation is particularly stunning.
The site is currently a green playing field that slopes approximately 11m from top to bottom.
The site faces almost due south, making an earth sheltered solution very appropriate. |

The Building
In the approved plans, the building sits within the slope of the grassed land, with one exposed wall facing south.
This predominantly glazed wall provides excellent viewing opportunities and ensures the building has less impact on the site.
In addition, the roof provides an excellent viewing balcony. |

Environmental considerations
Earth sheltered structures are very green, as the earth surrounding the building insulates the structure, drawing heat (gained by passive solar gain through the south facing glazing during the summer months) from the building and storing it until winter when it is released back into the building. Therefore the temperature is regulated throughout the year. |

Sustainability
Push aerated taps and showers, together with dual flush toilets, to reduce water consumption.
Shower water will be recycled and used to flush toilets (grey water recycling).
Natural, passive stack ventilation will be used and natural lighting of deep plan areas will be achieved through the use of roof lights and/or sun pipe tubes. |

Building plan
The building is split into two parts; the changing and toilets area and the bar/dining area. This is for ease of use for different groups using the building. The changing area can be used by the school and the pavilion area locked away. The pavilion could alternatively be used by other groups such as adult education groups, with the changing room area locked. |

Building usage
In this way the building and pitch facilities could be used by a variety of different groups during the day, in the evenings and at weekends to maximise use.
It could also provide local opportunities to improve accessibility to leisure and recreation activities. |

Disabled access
The building is single storey and has been designed specifically with the disabled in mind. There are automatic opening doors, straight wide corridors and spaces. The bar area has been designed to be notionally split into three areas; a dining area, a seating area and a mingling area that can accommodate two teams of wheelchair users – 45 sq.m |
